So, I've heard many debates that cheerleading is a "sport" to some and to others not.

What are your opinions?

-- Posted by RememberTheName at 4:52 pm on Jan. 19, 2008

I see it more as a dance.

-- Posted by michael10 at 4:53 pm on Jan. 19, 2008

It's an activity, not a fucking sport. I hate those little pom-pom holders saying the stupidest stuff...

-- Posted by k blunt at 4:53 pm on Jan. 19, 2008

-- Posted by PimpMyHoes at 4:53 pm on Jan. 19, 2008

-- Posted by flowerbutterfly at 4:53 pm on Jan. 19, 2008

-- Posted by hinshawwrx at 4:53 pm on Jan. 19, 2008

Not a sport, per se.

Definition of a sport:

1. Involves offense and defense (however abstract that may be). - This is what cheerleading does not adhere to.
2. Involves physical activity to the potential point of exhaustion.

No I do not believe golf is a sport. Yes, auto racing is - tangible, yet abstract, offense and defense is present in auto racing, and yes it's physically exhausting.

So then you would conclude that the 'field' half of "track and field" wouldn't be considered sports?

competitive cheering

is still NOT a sport.

I think that cheerleading can be considered a sport. It takes a lot of work to be a competitive cheerleader. You don't see any fat girls running around do you? It takes target training and all the other aspects other sports need. Just because cheerleaders say "Go Team" doesn't make it less of a sport.

-- Posted by geoman08 at 8:53 pm on Jan. 19, 2008

It is not a sport, but it is physically demanding, especially for very competitive teams.  It is a skill that takes practice, but definitely not a sport.

Someone earlier posted that a lot of cheerleaders are stuck up.  I would tend to agree with that.  I have no idea why, but for some reason they do tend to be stuck up and arrogant.

yes it is

Maybe if they are at a competition or something. But at a football game they are just eye candy for old men.

I respectfully disagree. Cheerleading is a sport. they work very hard.

and its not just old men who enjoy it. men of all ages and stripes find cheerleading to be an integral part of the football experience.

Cheerleaders, especially competitive, really work themselves. We have to do situps, pushups, all that jazz. Conditioning is a big part. Have you ever seen a good fat cheerleader?

-- Posted by 2ndbreakfast79 at 9:56 am on Mar. 20, 2008

only if tumbling is involved.

-- Posted by Daydreamerangel at 10:58 am on Mar. 21, 2008

Its not really a sport but it has a lot of the physical demands that a sport does have and its very competitive

-- Posted by HookahBliss at 3:03 pm on Mar. 21, 2008

The actual leading of cheers, I would say, is not sport-like at all. However, when you get down to half-time routines and stunts and competitions, I believe those parts of cheerleading do lend it to be considered a sport.

-- Posted by The CBL at 1:25 pm on April 8, 2008

Yeah, it's pretty hard.

-- Posted by Coco Bean at 6:51 am on May 16, 2008

I think competitive cheerleading is a sport, yes.

The actual cheering part that you see most often? No.
