What is STRESS?

How one's body reacts to change can be called stress. These changes can come from feelings, situations, and people. For example, going to a new school is a change that can cause stress.

Think about changes that have happened to you or will happen to you.

Stressors
Things that cause stress are called stressors. For example:

- Going to a new school
- Divorce or separation of parents
- Winning an award
- Taking a test
- Death of a relative
- Being sick

Is a stressor for you?
Is all stress bad? No!

Most people define stress as worry, tension and pressure, but all stress isn't bad. Some stress can be happy, exciting and challenging. We need stress in our lives; without it life would be dull. For example, right before a race, Mark always feels a little nervous. This stress helps Mark stay alert and prepared. Can you name a time when stress helped you stay alert and prepared?

What causes stress to be good or bad?

Our thoughts, feelings and beliefs about a situation can make stress good (pleasant) or bad (unpleasant). For example, Nicole's mother informed her that they will be moving to a new city. Moving to a new place is a stressor that will automatically cause Nicole some stress since it is a "change".

If Nicole is excited and happy about the move, then this will be considered a good stressor for her. On the other hand, if Nicole is sad and scared about the move, then this will be considered a bad stressor for her.

Situations that cause us to feel happy, excited, surprised, etc, can be called good stressors, and situations that cause us to feel sad, scared, mad, etc, can be called bad stressors.

What is a good (happy, excited, etc) stressor for you?

What is a bad (sad, scared, etc) stressor for you?

Is Too much stress bad?

Too much stress can have a negative affect on one's body, mind, and feelings. How you handle your stress has a lot to do with your health. When stress becomes too frustrating and lasts for long periods, it can become harmful distress. Recognizing the early signs of stress and doing something about it can improve the quality of your life. If you have signs of stress very often ... WATCH OUT!

Winning an award is a stressor?

I find that most of my stress problems are caused by other people irritating me. lol. :D

-- Posted by XxCrazyDawg69xX at 7:53 am on Mar. 14, 2004

I would think so, just think if you won an award like at a grammy or something if you were an actor.  You know for those couple of minutes they are really stressed walking in front of all those people, eyes on all of them while they stutter to think of something to say.

Way to get alleviate stress.

1.) look at your goals, stress is caused when we feel out of control and is not getting what we want.  Look at what you want, is it realistc? if not then readjust and accept the situation as is.  (this does not apply to abusive situations)

2.) Relax, dont worry about what other people think of you.  Cause some people will like you and some wont and it's ok.  Dont let the 20% A-holes make you feel down. Remember there is 80% of ppl out there who are good and likes you  :D

3.) write down your feelings, what you want to accomplish and how you what you will do to accomplish them. Goals should be concrete and measureable not "i want to feel better, or i want to get better grades".  It should be "i want to get 4 As on the next report card and will study for one hour each day to reach my goal".  Be realistic and take it in small increments.  Bigger goals should be broken down into smaller peices in 3-4 month time frames.

YOU CAN DO IT.   :D

1a. Don't sweat the small stuff.
1b. Its all small stuff

2. If it will matter in 50 years, then its ok to stress about it.

3. Just relax, it could be worse, but it isn't.

What about cutting does that help relieve stress?

-- Posted by XxCrazyDawg69xX at 4:50 pm on Oct. 11, 2004

Well, I wouldn't recommend starting cutting for stress relief, there are better ways.  I guess it would if you were already a cutter, and found it to be a big relief to harm yourself.

I generaly play this game to relive stress

Very good topic!  I was going to make one just like it but you left me speechless.  This has been one of the most stressful weeks for me.  I have almost all those signs/symptoms of stress right now (except I don't have rashes or increased urination).  The week is almost over so I am starting to feel a little better.

Just a little, picky note:
In your list of Signs of Stress, you have 'Increased urination Lack of Concentration' all on one line.

thx topic 2 read

-- Posted by teddyluv at 4:28 pm on Dec. 22, 2004

the best way to relieve stress is to be home relaxing not lifting a finger. or hanging with friends having fun not worry about any problems..or just take a nap. clear your mind for a day.

-- Posted by shuga at 1:59 pm on Jan. 18, 2005

thanks for that info! read it, going to do some of it to reduce stress. i had a panic attack about two months ago due to stress, and let me tell you it was such a freaky thing to have!

-- Posted by Melanie32 at 7:43 pm on Feb. 16, 2005

I've been really stressed out lately just about life in general. I've basically tried everything that was mentioned. The only thing that takes away my stress is during sporting events. Thanks anyway.
