Well, colour me surprised.

Only six percent of America's scientists identify themselves as Republicans; fifty-five percent call themselves Democrats. By comparison, 23 percent of the overall public considers itself Republican, while 35 percent say they're Democrats.

The ideological discrepancies were similar. Nine percent of scientists said they were "conservative" while 52 percent described themselves as "liberal," and 14 percent "very liberal." The corresponding figures for the general public were 37, 20 and 5 percent.

Not surprising, republicans and science don't go so well together.
*Actually, I'd say it's because Democrats give more money to science >_> but whatev.

Somehow that makes sense to me.

It makes sense because Republicans are too Conservative.

Republicans are anti-science => scientists are anti-republicans. Go figure

I think it probably has to do with money.

Liberals/democrats just love funding things with OPM... most science ventures are loving that funding.

Oh so thats WHY republicans hate science...ok...

Lol, you accept an unproven claim by some ignorant people?

-- Posted by kob8778 at 3:49 pm on July 12, 2009

Republicans don't like science because they believe that things like facts or any evidence contrary to what they themselves believe are just tools of the liberal media.

So you lump all Republicans into that group? Show me how stereotyping works.

Maybe not all, just 94% of them from the numbers in the article.

I couldn't find that number associated with creationism anywhere in that article.

No offense Elm, but there's a lot of anti-science fundies in the republican party. Yes, I know you're not one of them. But more and more, the people who aren't, the people who are more moderate or more intelligent, have been leaving the party. It's hardly a surprise that fewer scientists want to be associated with the GOP now, but I'd be surprised if there aren't a significant number of more conservative-oriented people in that group who simply don't identify as republican.

And I can say there are a lot of anti-science individuals in the democrat party as well.  People who don't weigh evidence, people who abhor the idea of cost-benefit analysis and the like.

That being said very few independents and a great deal less conservatives are republicans at the moment, and I really can't blame them.

No but apprently YOU do!

Maybe most conservatives have more old fashioned "church, home, and community" dreams about what to do with their lives, dreams which don't require much more than a degree in the humanities or liberal arts.
