I'm writing a novel called Seashells and Starfish, and one of my characters passed out. I want to make it so he has an iron deficiency, but I'm not sure of A) How people find that out, and B) If its from a blood test, how long the results take to come back to the ER. Anyone know the answers to these?

I'm pretty sure it's a blood test, and it would take at least a few hours. But you wouldn't have to specify time necessarily would you? But yeah... Look it up to be certain.

It's a blood test, but if it's an iron deficiency, it's really easy. Have you ever given blood? They prick your finger and squeeze a drop into this solution, and depending on how fast it falls, that says what your iron levels are. Use google to figure out what the solution is.

It can be called anaemia, which sounds cooler.

A full blood count would likely reveal microcytic anemia [2]
