Before we met, she enlisted in the army for an 8 year term...I love the girl more than anything in my life, and im not sure what to expect from this......i know the process she has to go through, i have family going through it.  But, im not sure how her being in the military is going to affect our relationship.  The last thing i want is it to be ended, she means everything to me.

It isn't eight years. I bet she signed for four years active. The other four years is when she  is inactive, but can still be called.

Either way, what can i expect?

-- Posted by Joep0113 at 9:00 pm on July 5, 2009

Like the first post said, and its going to affect your relationship in a pretty big way.

-- Posted by Jasonzlpa at 9:00 pm on July 5, 2009

Oh.  Ouch.  Just spend all the time you can with her now, and as much time as you possibly can when she gets leave, can talk otp or otc, that kind of stuff.  Plus think of the funny stuff when you're down...  like how she'll be able to kick your ass ten ways to Sunday.

-- Posted by jsia at 9:04 pm on July 5, 2009

If she's enlisted she can't really do anything. Just stand by her memory and do what you can if you wanna stick to it.

I know the terminolgoy, i was looking at enlisting before i met her, only to find that they wouldnt take me until i get 15 college credits under my belt.

She leaves next summer, but the fact that we both know its coming, it bugs her, ive caught her crying about it, and it has pretty much the same effect on me.

They will take you now, you have to have 15 credits to become a PFC I do believe. It's better when you work your way up in grade.

You have to have a high school diploma though........which, i am lacking.

Well one of the important things is to do is to live in the moment and enjoy the time you have NOW. You may be depressed about it but its important not to to loose site of the big picture, she should be proud of what she is doing. and being depressed isnt the best way to spend the remaining time . Even though that time is 11 months

Are you already in college? If you aren't then tell them you want to get your GED, they might pay for it if you sign a contract. They payed for mine.

Its not always better to work your way up in grade, you get treated the same way when your lower enlisted E-4 and below. (not that you get treated poorly) but if you can make more money, when your in IET status by all means go for it. When you get to your unit it wont affect you adversely as long as your not a shit bag about it, and flaunt that you entered at a higher rank you should be fine

-- Posted by Anonymous at 9:16 pm on July 5, 2009

And i agree completely, and that has nothing to do with my question.  Mainly, i guess what i want to know, is how our relationship is going to be treated.

Ive done a small amount of research, and it looks to me that unless we are married, we are not considered anything.

Its not that im even against marraige, i want to marry her.  But its not something i wanted to be forced to be able to have a life together......

-- Posted by PrintingFreak at 9:18 pm on July 5, 2009

What do you mean how is your relationship going to be treated?

-- Posted by Anonymous at 9:18 pm on July 5, 2009

And as far as my enlistment would go, the state i reside in has laws that have my hands tied until next April.  at which point, my school will have already paid for me to take an HSED course, however, when i talked to a recruiter, i was told i would not be excepted unless i had 15 or more college credit hours.

I mean it exactly as i said it, how do you wish for me to elaborate?

-- Posted by PrintingFreak at 9:22 pm on July 5, 2009

the part that confuses me, are you asking how is she going to treat your relationship while she is enlisted? or
What support does the army provide for the significant others of soldiers?`

-- Posted by Anonymous at 9:24 pm on July 5, 2009

I know how she is going to treat it, its not her im worried about, Its more the military in general.

-- Posted by Forgot My Name at 9:26 pm on July 5, 2009

I'm going to tell you what I experienced when I was in the Army. Long distance relationships do not last. In fact, all relationships struggle when it comes to the Military. Many girls in the Military are little sluts. I'm sure you don't want to here that, but it is true. All I have to say is Good Luck.

-- Posted by PrintingFreak at 9:30 pm on July 5, 2009

Well untill/unless you join, you wont have any true benefits from the army unless your married, The army will expect her to do her Duty just as if she was married, Deployments are tough but the army does offer services to assist you in being able to remain in contact via webcam and other messages.

When she gets done with BCT, so will have a totally different mentality. Where is she going for BCT? Relaxin Jackson?
