It might not be a case of him thinking work is more important. When my grandfather was dying I wasn't able to go a) because my work told me I'd be fired if I left on such short notice and B) my boyfriend at the time didn't want me to. The last job that I worked at wouldn't have let me go to visit my dying grandmother. No joke. One time this chick asked for a Saturday off so she could attend her grandma's cancer benefit and the HR manager told her absolutely not. Oh, and another time this chick's grandpa died on Christmas Eve and they wouldn't let her leave.
