Apparently the average IQ of each generation goes up by 5 to 9 points. Therefore I deduce that the human race is not getting more intelligent, which people say IQ is an indicator of in people, but are becoming more intellectual as their academic skills have been more highly hones than their predecessor's. Otherwise you'd have to argue that our brains are profoundly more intelligent than the cave men's.

Because the kids want to be gangsters? Or their just stupid until a certain age?? I'm out of guesses.

IQ tests aren't reliable. It's discussed a lot in pshychology. It's just a stupid, subjective way to try to compare intelligence that is deeply flawed and should be completely disregarded.

I agree, IQ tends to be more about book smarts then anything else. Sure you can remember pi to a thousand digits, but if I tossed you in the woods how long would you last. Each generation just seems to not have to worry about manual stuff and this are able to become smarter, but if society failed the "smart" ones are probably going to be the first to die off. Edit, to simplify it just measures a small part of ones intelligence, its not even great for comparing academics but there's so many other things that it completely ignores.

They're still going up in Ireland and a lot of other countries in the world. You know there is an area outside of America called 2The Rest of the World". I doubt you'd have heard about it though...

I'm sure there were cave men who would have scored 150 in IQ tests if they had the academic opportunities they are given now, which I think is the reason as to why the IQ levels go up. Not the manual stuff you're blabbering on about.

That's what I meant, you have a hell of a lot more opportunities if you don't have to spend your life working 12 hours a day on a farm to keep your family alive. The more advanced society gets the more people are able to improve themselves.

I disagree. Your IQ is not a measure of how much you already know, but rather an indicator of how capable you are of grasping new concepts and ideas.

Do you have statistics to show that we're gaining in IQ but not intelligence? How do you measure intelligence?

I don't know how you would measure intelligence, and I don't think its possible. The term used for what I am describing is called the Flynn effect, look it up and it will give you all the statistics you want.

I don't think they're very accurate at all. I've met complete idiots with higher IQ's than I have, and I'd like to think I'm atleast a bit above average in intelligence. For example, I'm pretty good with linguistics, but horrible at math.. and yet those tests don't account for what you're specifically good at. Nobody is good at everything.

But intelligence is a combination of genes and environment, so it is perfectly alright to say that humans are getting more intelligent.

So someone who goes to Harvard university because they have the money is more intelligent than you or I? I think intellectual would be the word to describe the effect of environment on that aspect.

Education certainly doesn't. You can "educate" (as in teach) a dog or a monkey. It doesn't increase their "intelligence". An uneducated "genius" is no less a genius. So, what are some of these "things" you think equal intelligence?
