Drugs affect how you sense the world; different sensory input makes their distortions more pronounced. For example, ecstasy makes lights seem much more intense and beautiful, so someone chilling out in a dark forest at night will not roll as hard as someone inside a rave being bombarded with intense, multicolored lights. I personally feel more high outside during the day, because daytime light makes everything look the best for me when I'm stoned.
