Its not a barren waste land, if it was no one would be there! Africa was once full of successfull and intelligent people. They had there own kindoms, languages, and beliefs. The OP is comparing Africans living in America with those living in Africa. To fully appreciate the standard of living in Africa which the OP uses as a ruler to compare and contrast the living conditions of African Americans, one should look at the history of Africa and realize that the continent is so backwards today precisely because of European interference and domination.
As for the OP, the living conditions of Africans in the US is in spite of the intentions of white slave owners.
Paradoxically, it could be argued that America is great today because of the free labor that Africans provided. So really, African Americans should be giving themselves a pat on the back.
