But from I read on AVG's website, I didn't like what they had to offer on just the free version. I felt like too much was missing from the Free version.
What's your opinion? Cause I took McAfee off of my dad's computer without his knowledge, and installed avast!. It's protected me very well so far, and I've had no failures with it.
Anyway, here's my opinion on AVG vs. Avast (I have 3-4 computers and I use both, depending on the computer). Avast uses slightly more system resources than AVG, but has more features. When AVG is running, though, it is basically the only thing you can use on your system. With Avast, you can run scans in the background. Thus, if you have a slow computer, go with AVG.
Avast uses more resources because of its live monitoring--it will monitor the web sites you go to, files you open, etc. and warn you before you get infected. It automatically updates and does everything itself so you hardly ever have to touch its horribly designed interface. Avast will block the connection to malware distribution sites (it will ask you first, though), and it will monitor IM/email. It can scan the memory and you can set it to do boot-time scans. Many of these features are only available in the paid version of AVG.
Thus, since most of my computers are fairly fast, I choose Avast. It's important to note, though, that it uses nowhere near the resources Norton uses and it does not take over your computer. Avast is more of a passive program--it runs in the background and you only see it when you need it. AVG tends to be a bit more hands-on.
never did like avg
