As for comments about how much RAM can hardware support etc, its fairly common for servers to support up to 16GB and this much RAM can be very nice for database systems. I have seen commercial servers go up to 32GB support, but passed that it starts to get a bit more specialist.

To be honest, until I had just found that out using google... I did not know that there were such systems with the hardware capability to support that much ram.
My assumption is that it is primarily for server's that run massive networks or websites, but it is still a lot.
