Its re-arranging all the bits and pieces of your files to make it easier for the computer to read. If you have a large hard drive, lots of files, and havent defraged before, it could take some time. Oh, and its best to not use the computer as it defrags.
Why not?
Its trying to place all of your files in close pieces together, and in a logical order. If you are using your computer, its writing new files as you use it. Therefore, its counter-productive to use the computer as it defrags. It will make it take longer, and it wont do as good of a job.
it'll screw up too |

If you move pieces its moving or creating new temporary files (by browsing) its going to have to rearrange those said files with ones its already put in. To put it simply, you're dumping files into a filing cabinet thats in the process being organised. Can lead to corruption in your harddrives files and generally slows it way down. |
