What is it:
This is a poetry contest. If you so choose, you will write a birthday poem for a girl who is turning 18. Her name is Shay Mecke. (first e is short, last e is long)

Background:
I am in need of a poem to give to a girl on her 18th birthday. Her birthday is July 30th. Remember, we are just friends...so please, nothing that will creep her out. Nora helped me out immensely and she came up with the following. You may either modify it to your liking, or create a completely new poem. It's up to you. I like the first verse and part of the second verse. There are also a few lines that she came up with in addition to the original poem, so you can use that in it if you would like.

I'm writing this poem for a girl named Shay,
For every year there is a day,
In which another year is turned,
And thus another digit earned.
And on the thirtieth of July,
(Hallelujah! By and by,)
Shay is turning eighteen years,
And so we all can shout our cheers!

With years come age, with age we move
And I hope that I will prove,
That when you go to the C of O,
I'll miss walking the ways you go,
You're really awesome at guitar, ------------I'm not liking this part...
And going each week to The Rivr.
Happy Birthday, Shay Mecke,
Have a great day, and Au Rivoir!

Not only is eighteen divisible by two,
It is now the number that represents you!
Child to adult in just one day,
It's really pretty awesome, Shay!

Guidelines:
The only thing that I ask is for you not to use any profanity, suggestive things, and try not to make it romantic. Other than that you are free to do whatever you want. I will say that I like poems that rhyme because I think they are fun, but you don't have to do it that way if you don't want. I don't want to limit you.

Prizes:
I currently have 4000 points that I'm willing to depart with and have a few other people willing to make contributions.

Deadline:
July 28th

If you have any poetic talent at all, please give it a shot!!!

I will get this put up on the contest page as soon as possible and hopefully get a sticky.

Hi pujolsfan! Cool to hear about your friend's b-day. I wrote this for her, and though it may be on the short side I really hope you like it:

Shay Mecke, 18-to-be
Seven months since New Year's eve
The fireworks are like your life
Spiraling up into flight

They say that youth is tied to fun
Well I say youth is in the sun
As long as birthdays light the sky
You'll have joy in all your life

I've always treasured all my friends
Those whom talk and smiles lend
And you I treasure eighteen times
Today, for with you friendship rhymes

In years to come we'll grow together
Days of fair and cloudy weather
Now let us think of futures bright
And toast your 18 years tonight!

YOU WIN!!!

OK, here's my alternate version. If you'd like me to mix the two, or change either of them just let me know!

How exciting can it be
When all can hear, and say and see
That Shay Mecke has turned 18
I think it's one amazing thing

As friend I count you, rain or shine
And more skies you've yet to find
Wherever you can see a path
I'm sure you'll live it with a laugh

I send you health and happiness
And much good luck, and joy no less
When all is said and all is done
Remember all the birthday fun

18 years have led you here
Decades more of life and cheer
Are waiting just around the bend
Congratulations, my good friend!

You know the point of poems is so that they are meaningful, people here can write poems but not about anything to do with your friendhsip with this girl.

whatever someone here is able to do is going to be a lot better than what i could attempt to do

Well then you could have suggested more things to include...like she likes apples and the colour red and hates dogs, is scared of butterfly's...somehting for the artistic people to work with you know what i mean?

yeah, i kinda wanted it to be generic. be artsy with words and not necessarily things about her. the less personal it is the less creepy she will think i am

Well i guess so.

On your 18th birthday you are given a key
To a whole new world to explore and see
With many decisions for you to make
That effect the future path you take
But i am sure, that in your heart
You know exactly where to start
So for the moment just have some fun
And celebrate with everyone
For your 18th birthday you must enjoy
Your an adult now so don,t be coy

I'm not sure I would want someone to write a poem for me so that I could give it to someone else. :/

That just seems awkward to me. I think the fact that you do it yourself is what really makes it special.

i agree. but there is a problem with that...i cant write poetry.

You're an adult now
But you're still my little girl
Remember the time we
Spoke out against world?
It was you and me for a moment
It will be us for a lifetime
Today's your reckoning
Don't let it go to waste.

Hey Shay I know turning eighteen
can be cool and frightening
but no need to fret
cause like max goof said "this is the first day of the rest of your life" and he does have a point
from this moment on you're not just a girl in this land
you're blossoming into a wo-MAN
