Really, anything beyond high school or maybe the first couple years of college is too old, because by then, people your age are getting married. I would suggest some other piece of jewelry, probably a nice necklace. If you simply must make it a ring, make it something small, with a coloured gemstone so it will be clear it's not an engagement ring, but maybe don't call it a promise ring.
