The difference between Eric and I is, he thinks front wheel drive, automatic, low-output GM sedans are the greatest things in the world. I think Tempos are.

Part time 4WD is more then most cars. Specifically the Impala, and all its numerous re-branded, re-badged siblings throughout its overly long and drawn out production run that should have ended over a decade ago in lieu of superior product. Instead, Toyota took the lead that GM never had (prior to the Camry era, Ford had the bragging rights with Taurus, Escort, and in the 1980s; Tempo).

What a shame. Had they built a better product, the American auto industry might not be in the condition its in. Excuse me, General Motors might not be in the condition its in. Ford's still got the best selling truck, American mid-size, et cetera.

But wait there's more!

One must consider relativity. Today, the Ford Tempo is considered an outdated and out-of-style compact economy car. Not so in 1984, 1988, and most model years prior to the 1992 restyle (which knocked the Tempo down a notch to compete with the Chevrolet Cavalier).

Neither of us were aware of the world when the Tempo was still in production. But oh was it in production. A niche vehicle of sorts, the Tempo was not a mainstream economy car. At the time, Ford had a compact economy sedan for the masses called the Escort. Tempo was nearly identical to the Escort in terms of exterior dimensions and powertrain options, but with the addition of many more options, packages, trim levels, drivetrain, and of course; higher quality fittings and trim.

These things propelled the Tempo (which was lost in limbo; better then a Cavalier/K-car, but not as large as the Malibus and Taurus' of the world) to see sales of over 500,000 units in one model year, and go on to sell over three million total by the time it was discontinued.

While the Cavalier lived on to become less safe, less appealing, and more of a reputation burden to GM throughout the years, Tempo died its death. Good thing too, because the Contour fucking sucked.

Then we are faced with a dilemma.

Girl #1: Hot, not-too-intelligent, digs the F-150.
Girl #2: Pretty, hard to get, is unimpressed with the F-150. Drives a silver Chrysler Town & Country.

Girl #1 I could get with very little effort, but girl #2 is a much more awesome person.

wait, awesome 80's town & country w/ wood paneling or semi-lame 90's town and country minivan reincarnation?

I'm sure they were just great back in the day but they're just shit now.  Nothing to brag about.  Or even be happy to own.

Holy fucking shit this guy is RETARDED. The Tempo was never "ahead of the curve" or "innovative" it was a SIMPLE economy car. Subaru offered AWD cars in the 80's, so who's to say Ford wasn't behind? Instead you keep telling your nut hugging self that your little ecobox piece was the greatest thing to the automotive world. Because it didn't give shit! I mean, look at those "automatic" seatbelts and how they caught on! WOOOOO DOGGY! Its a wonder with all these innovations on this piece of shit car you have that the 8 year olds don't throw their panties to you!

Okay, its nothing to brag about sure. But hold off on the "be happy to own" remark for a second. It gets great gas mileage, while having a small tank of gas. Insurance is dirt cheap too, and its reasonably comfortable compared to trucks or muscle cars, or sports cars. All of which are great fun and all, but not for long distances or frequent use.

That old econobox costs about one fourth the amount of cash in insurance and gas that the F-150 takes. I can only imagine, a Fox Body Mustang is probably twice as bad as my truck.

Twice as bad as in gas or as in insurance

Why are Cavaliers always brought up? Where in the hell did I chime in on this topic saying they were so good? Use a Sundance/Duster or Breeze/Cirrus once in a while eh?

Gas tank size has nothing to do with MPG's. Insurance is cheap because its old and an econobox. And you compare the ride to that of a truck or muscle car thats geared for different driveability aspects.

You are DUMB

You're from Mississippi.

Now cogitate on this for a second. My F-150 has the same exact size gas tank as a Ford Tempo (non-AWD). 15 gallons of gasoline about. Now you could option it up to an 18 gallon single tank or a 25 gallon dual-tank. That doesn't mean the truck is more fuel efficient, it just means fill-ups are farther and farther apart.

This makes fuel efficiency seemingly worse. That's not the point though, the point is I'm breaking the bank every single day to fill that truck up whereas with the Cheyenne (it had the full size fuel tank option at 24.7 gallons) I was doing so every other day.

Now, why would I compare the Tempo to something that isn't a truck? I only have the Tempo and the F-150, so that's my reference. Small world I know.
