I ended up in a panic tonight.  a fight happened where I was volunteering, and there wasn't anything I could do about it.  It happened so quickly, to people I care about...I just froze.  I couldn't help after I snapped out of it but to run outside for air.  it was that bad.  I hate it when friends of mine get in a situation like that.  but I hate myself more for running away, because it was someone close to them they were fighting.

after things calmed down, I gave her a hug.  but I could just tell the life force was drained from her.

am I a terrible friend?

No, not at all. It was not your duty to get involved, and you comforted your friend. Don't hate yourself.

You're just a volunteer. No one is expecting you to break it up and put yourself in danger. You did all that you could. Everyone freezes up when they see something like that, especially when they aren't used to it. You're not a terrible friend. You were just scared and unsure of what to do. Anyone should be able to understand that.

I agree.

It's not like you said you would have her back in a fight and you didn't. You jut happened to be there, and you most likely aren't used to that kind of stuff. That happens with a lot of people the first time they fight. Hell, I've been in a ton of fights and I still get that familiar adrenaline rush from the fight or flight response.

I just wanted to keep running.  it was a trusted friend who was in a situation I could do nothing for.  I wanted to call the cops.  I wanted to call an interventionist, someone to stop the fight.   everyone just stood around as if it wasn't their business...but I just hid in the corner of a square cement corner.

but then I had to go back in.  I did not want her to be alone.  but there wasn't anything I could do to help.

I guess it just isn't normal for my every day life structure to take that kind of hit, despite what I tend to imagine.

You can't always try to help your friends, because quite frankly would you rather give them poor help and fail at it, or stand by and know that you're doing all that you can. It kind-of wasn't anyone's business, and you can't blame them for not wanting to intervene knowing that they too could have been swung at or harassed afterwords. Everyone else was hiding, and you were just doing the same. Don't beat yourself up over one mistake. Sure you could have done something, but sometimes we do freeze up and lose control of what we can/can not do. The ending is marvelous. At least you went back to see if she was okay, to show that you were a true friend. That there should stand for something, right?
