  • '01 Pontiac Grand Am, 91K miles, $4,950
  • '01 Ford Focus, 117K miles, $3,990
  • '02 Ford Escort, 77K, $5,990
  • '00 Volvo S40, 91K miles, $4,600

I would go with the S40 given those options, probably. Only way to choose would get the CarFax for all options and check them out in person.

If in good condition the S40 would be a good choice. Tied for second in lowest mileage. And it is relatively new (when compared to the older Camaro, never heard of a Camero).

I could really use more than you one-word recommendations.  Reasons?  Are there any cars that are totally unreliable and shouldn't be on the list?  Are any of those prices outrageous?

Ok, I wouldn't go with the Chevy because it's over 15 years old and parts will be more expensive and hard to find.

Take a look at the engine in the other cars.  I would normally say go with the car that has the fewest miles but you can't go solely on that.  Have someone you know look at the engine and see which one is in the best shape.

That's what I did for my first car.  I had a few selections and went with the car that has the least amount of motor damage.  Which meant I would spend less in repairs.

Escorts are notorious for shitty transmissions, and almost 6 grand for one is a complete and utter rip-off so I'd personally scratch that off my list. Grand AMs are decent the 3400s have a decent set of balls and I haven't heard of any horror stories about them so I would think abotu that. 93 Camaro... I know nothing about them reliabilty wise but personally, I want one. And finally the S40... its safe. I'm not sure about their reliability but I know tons of people who are buying them so they're doing something right. All-in-all I would choose the Camaro or the Grand AM personally but its up to you. If I were in your shoes I would just do some online reasearch about these cars. This is the most biased forum I have ever been on, so you're not gonna get many legit opinions here. I'm personally a fan of Gm so consider that reading this.
