Stickied because this is comprehensive enough to capture a current event well.

I do hope there will be some discussion to come out of this, preferably in this topic.

Can OP paste his post from the other topic into the first post please? It provides a good explanation of the scenario.

no, our healthcare shouldnt be handed out by the government. they will decide who gets treatment and who doesnt. plus you will be paying for poor people's care with outrageous taxes.

Where is the "I am American and can take care of my own damn self" option?

you could perform open heart surgery on yourself if you needed it?

If I was in the situation where I'd need open heart surgery I'd probably just accept the fact that I am simply going to die.

You're in the wrong country then.

I posted this in my last topic, most of quick I incorporated into the OP, but a mod reckons the OP should contain unbiased material so I'm posting my own opinion further down the page, right now.

I personally think Obama's plan is an excellent one, it will create a basic healthcare safety net for all those living below the poverty line and those who cannot afford health insurance under the current system.  Sure, our NHS isn't perfect, but I'm so glad it's there.

The general idea is that everyone gets treatment, surely?

In the UK, for example, there isn't government intervention per se.  If there was there'd be an outcry.

they look at statistics. if you are over a certain age, it is no longer "logical" to treat you.

plus the bill is already 600 pages. who knows what else is in it? who has read the entire bill?

What do you guys (Brits and Americans and others) think about Obama's universal healthcare plan?
First, Obama does not have a health care plan. Only an idea that he hasn't really articulated that well.

The current (available to read) House plan, as written, simply sucks. The (available to read) Senate plan is woefully incomplete.

Whether you live or die shouldn't be dictated by how much money you have.

they're obligated by law to service you if you need life saving treatment, doctors aren't gonna just deny you and let you die

I completely support Obama's healthcare reform and every time a conservative uses a scare tactic or calls it evil just makes me want it more.  As of right now, I have health insurance because of my dad, but once I finish school, I'll be on my own unless I get a job that provides good coverage.  I don't want to have to decide on a job based on healthcare plans and I definately don't want to spend thousands on insurance or medical bills over the course of my lifetime.  I'd prefer a slightly higher tax so everybody's paying what they can afford to give, with a percentage system on what I can afford.  Those with the most money pay for most of it, as the healthcare system directly and/or indirectly affects everyone in this country.  I don't mind paying some healthcare taxes if it means I'm helping an uninsured person get life saving surgery that he/she wouldn't be able to get otherwise.  We can use this reform to increase our life expectancy, and I believe we can keep the benefits of our current system as well.  It doesn't have to be identical to the Socialist countries, but it needs to be closer than it is right now.

Yes, but after the life is saved, the saved person will have a huge debt that most likely can never get paid off.
