Yes, I am British.
But is nice to be able to say we have it and they don't

Well, no, most of us don't consider it a good thing. There are several problems with state sponsored health care. One of which is that taking the profit motive out of health care effectively stops the advances of medical science. Worldwide socialized medicine treats it's subjects using techniques, pharmaceuticals and equipment developed by profit based medicine (primarily the U.S.). I suppose it's great that the rest of the world can take advantage of the gift of life given to it by the U.S., but that doesn't mean that state health care is the best thing since sliced bread.

We can use this reform to increase our life expectancy, and I believe we can keep the benefits of our current system as well.

Stop making laws that tell people how to best live their lives: Longevity and perfect health are not always preferrible if they come with the price of leading a sterile existence. Let people have a chocie in the matter! That's all I am saying!

It is difficult, the NHS is tricky. I have had bad experiences with it, but also good ones. I mean, I don't pay for birth control, I get it free every six months at a drop in clinic where you can get every different type for free.

Getting a doctors appointment can be a pain, but usually if you pester you can get one immediately. That being said, my parents don't rate the health care system we have highly. My dad has just taken out private insurance.

I vote no because I think that it gives the government power over life and death.  Think about it this way:   the current health care system requires that people be approved for health care by the insurance companies.  If we move this into the hands of the government then it gives them the ability to control the population and/or get rid of people who disagree with them.

That's no worse than the insurance companies.  They drop health coverage on people who get constantly sick so they can save money, leaving thousands of dollars worth of medical bills that will never, and should never be paid.  Healthcare is a right, not a privelege.

Explain why it's a "right", please.

everyone has the right to live. the problem is the placing of ones health as a burden on society, and therefore subject to government control as the prior commentators talk of. If one's body is subject to control by the state it is nothing less than a loss of liberty. Couching it in terms like 'responsibility', 'duty' or 'obligation', while making it more palatable does not negate the loss of freedom entailed.

in a society where the people have already traded their freedoms in order to be cared for, this conversation is in this case moot as whoisabs said. The deed is done and all that is left is the rationalizing we see here.

believe me, i want the status quo to change; i'm not one of those people, but one's right to life should not have to be rationalized by the government.

Every free citizen has the right to good healthcare because good health is a neccesity to live a long life.  To deny people healthcare because they can't afford insurance is like telling someone they're a second-class citizen.  We all have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  It's hard to live without healthcare, and it's hard to be happy when always sick and you can't see a doctor.

Death is and has always been a part of life. Why do you have a right to a "long" life? Why do you have a right to demand that someone else take care of you? Why do you have a right to demand that someone else pay for that care?

Just look at the facts.
Britain at the top of the list with one of the best health care services in the world.
America is 37th. The fact is, it's a good idea and has and always will work.

Your "fact" has a distorted reality based on the premises used to arrive at that conclusion.
