Hey there, to make a long story short---

Windows XP is shot and won't run and the folks want to get the data off their hard drive. Last time I did this for someone, I just threw Linux on there and starting transfering the data on to my External HDD so it was safe.

However, I put Linux on there again (Ubuntu) but this time it couldn't mount the drive?

Help? why? Is this distro of Linux not good for this shit?

Alright, thanks all.

How much would it cost to get the data recovered by a professional? Isn't it like hundreds?

Thanks--50 points for all this! :D

That's tough. Is the drive definitely still physically functioning? Are there are partitions you can use to your advantage?

A small business shop probably wouldn't rape you too hard on the recovery.

I'm pretty sure it spins. It goes to the whole screen where, "Safe Mode, Last known good config." and all that jazz but whenever you press one they all just sit there. Although safe mode boots up without a start menu though.

So, I'd say the drive still is goin'...

If you can't throw the drive into another Windows machine or Linux and it doesn't recognise it, it means that there's a more serious problem with a drive. Whether it's corrupt or an actual hardware error. If you start up the machine and go into the BIOS (usually F1/F2 or F11 something like that) have a check to see if you can find the drive in the hardware list. If you can that means it's more likely a corrupt sector on the drive (which isn't too hard to fix) if not then it's something more serious and if you badly need the data on the drive then you'll have to send that off to professional services.

If you can see the drive, running something like SpinRite can be a great way to repair the corrupt sectors and allow Windows to boot normally and access the drive. SpinRite isn't free, it's like $50 but it's well worth the money and it's saved my old PC and my dad's colleague's laptop numerous times. It's also much more affordable than professional recovery services which usually run a few hundred dollars or more.
