Fraternities and sororities

Fraternities and sororities collectively provide the greek life for any campus of which they reside. Fraternities for men and sororities for women. There are different types of greek organizations going from Christian focused, professional studies and ever major designated fraternities and sororities. Usually these organizations include some sort of philanthropy in which greek organization members either engage in fundraising or volunteer work. These organizations house secret rituals and attempt to build a brotherly or sisterly bond between members.

How can I join a Greek organization?

There is usually a formal recruiting period where the houses offer events and activities designed so members and potential members learn about the organization. After going to some or all of the events, the organization has the option to provide you an invitation to join their organization (bid). If accepted, chances are you'll be in a period of pledge-ship in which if either you or the organization feels you're not right for the house you can leave with no strings attached.

Any special requirements?

You'll find that some fraternities and sororities have pride in their members' GPAs. Requirements may be imposed by either the the organization or the school. You might be required to wear a pledge pin, learn about the history and/or culture of the organization and upon reaching tenure you have the option to become an active/initiated member. You will also have to pay dues as a member.

What about hazing?

Hazing is a crime in 44 states and most universities are very against hazing in any way, shape or form however, this does not mean that it doesn't happen. People have died from it and chapters can be suspended for taking part in these events.

Benefits

There has to be a reason why people go through these kinds of events, right? Yes. Members have a bond with their brothers or sisters and usually will always remain part of their brothers' or sisters' hearts. You will be provided with contacts with people in the real world through alumni associations although distance may vary.

Campus groups and clubs

Most campuses offer many groups and clubs for their students and highly encourage their usage. Being part of a club or group on campus allows incoming freshmen and even upperclassmen the opportunity to become more than a number that they can sometime become on a bigger campus. On most campuses, anyone can make a campus group or club easily and receive funding for their cause or purpose.

How would one find out about these groups or clubs?

During the first week of school you may come across an email or a flyer on your door alerting you to a showcase of campus clubs and groups however, if there isn't one of those floating around your campus don't count them out! Take a look at your college or university's website, normally there is a section for campus life and this is where you'll be able to find some through there. If you have no luck there, call your Student Union and ask them about campus groups and organizations.

Requirements?

Just like fraternities and sororities, you'll need to abide by both the university/college's requirements aswell as those of the club itself. Some schools go as far as requiring that you maintain a good standing with the university to participate.

If you have anything to add please contact me and I'll add/edit it in there, however, if a blue name has last modified my post, please seek the help of another blue named member as I will no longer have the ability to edit.
