Kava is a plant native to and utilized by the people of the Pacific Islands. The root of the plant contains psychoactive compounds aptly called kavalactones. There are a variety of these compounds, leading to a very interesting psychoactive effect from the plant if prepared into a beverage.
I don't remember how I came across this stuff, but I experimented with it last winter in Kava extracts and with root powder. The powder yeilds a more powerful beverage by far.
The effects are a blend of what I consider to be similar to mixing a strong benzodiazepine without much sedation, and a bit of euphoria not unlike that from a weak opioid, but at the same time, not unlike a low dose of a psychostimulant (it is difficult to tell given the overarching benzodiazepine-like high). It also has some strange psychadelic tinge, which I am unable to nail down-- basically similar to THC without the paranoia and awkwardness.
And in the United States, it is completely legal. I find it superior to alcohol and benzodiazepines. It is a nice, mild high that is not psychically addictive like other GABA and dopamine-acting drugs.
I suggest giving it a try.

Just telling people that there is a legal substance that is more interesting than boring old alcohol and cigarettes.

I have never met anyone else who knows about Kava. I guess in Hawaii it is well-known, but not in rural South-Central Pennsylvania haha.

See "Kavalactones." It basically rehashes what I was trying to say.

I think I tried that...

I think you would like it. Liking Cannabis, I think you would be pleased. It is a little less psychedelic, but has good euphoric properties, while being not psychically addictive. Try to find a good way to prepare it, though. That is the key. Most people don't do it right.

It's great for social anxiety. I have to take a few grams of it just to get through parties. If you're an introvert, kava is much better than alcohol for getting along at parties.

You may also have heard reports of kava causing liver problems. These are more unlikely than the serious side effects possible with other drugs, but it may not be a good idea to take kava all the time.

Another interesting plant is blue lotus. I like to fill jars with lotus petals, then cheap vodka. It makes a very nice tincture which seems to work well with kava. I've also noticed that both kava and lotus seem to make me more cheery for days after taking them. Blue lotus is also legal.

Don't take any of these if you have to drive.
