So I want to start learning a third language. I've already been taking Spanish for 3 years and I really like it, but I'd also like to start something new.

Now, I know you're either like, "Okay, you crazy bitch, just stick with Spanish" or "What are you thinking, taking 2 languages at once?" Haha. But really, just bear with me.

I'm an international relations major and everyone else in my classes can speak like 3 or 4 different languages and I feel kind of inadequate. haha.

Pros of French: It's a romance language like Spanish, so much of the vocabulary and grammar is similar. I already know how to conjugate the verbs in the present tense and a bunch of random vocabulary thanks to my trip to Quebec last summer. It's the language that every IR major who wants to be someone big someday seems obligated to know. It's useful, and not mention pretty.

Cons of French: I can hardly pronounce some things right in English. I already say things like "Excusez moi" in Spanish class accidentally, and I have a feeling that would only get worse.

Pros of Russian: It seems like such a random language to want to learn, but I swear I have good reasons. I'm absolutely fascinated by Russian culture and history and literature. And it's totally new and something different. I mean, everyone and their mom knows French and Spanish. Plus, the state department is apparently always bemoaning their lack of Russian speakers, and well, being the pragmatist I am, I see that as an opportunity.

Cons of Russian: Hello, new alphabet. And non-romance language. And hard-to-pronounce. And my 62 year old mother constantly asking "why the hell are you learning Russian?" Ah well.

What should I do?

I say French. You'll use it more, and the more you use it, the better you'll get-- and pronunciation is something you'll get used to. You can learn French properly, and later, on your own, go back and learn the basics of Russian. It really isn't that hard (though I only focus on knowing how to speak it and how to recognise words in the roman alphabet)

I hated French. But take Russian due to the lack of Russian speakers. Take advantage of the fact that there's a weakness. And let's face it, if you meet someone who speaks French, the chances are pretty good that they'll speak English as well.

Russian! Dobre den   Kaksti?
Haha, well that's Bulgarian but it's supposed to be really similar to Russian anyway.

I think Russian would be a really interesting language to learn, but more difficult than French in some ways.
I do think that you would find it easier to pronounce the Russian words, I can't pronounce many French words, but I don't find Bulgarian too challenging in that sense!
