Hey, Can you go into task manager and go on the "Processes" part and see what processes are using up the most ram. If you are having AVG running all the time and scanning this may be your problem, When a anti-virus program scans your whole computer for viruses it can be a resource hog . I'm not sure which browser you use because you haven't mentioned it but sometimes with Mozilla Firefox if you leave it running for a long time or leave it minimized and don't use it the ram can build up and it keeps on building up until it eventually crashes, I'm not sure if this happens in the newer versions but I remember it happening more than once to me.
Check the processes that are running and how much ram they are using, Report back what you have found and I will try to help you to the best of my ability.

Mkay. I have the Task manager up, and on processes. But how do I know which one takes up the most? is it under the memory sub tab?

Make the window full screen so that you can see all of the tabs, On xp it is "Mem Usage" not sure about vista but it should be something like that. It should have a number next to each process ending with a K.

virus running in the background, AVG doesnt pick up on everything.

I already figured that AVG isn't the best software, what do you suggest?

NORTON is the best

norton slows your shit down soooooooooo bad when running a scan

avg is the only one thats runs perfect... i deleted norton and downloaded avg, no problem since

It can slow your computer down if you have under a gig of ram. You're right. But it keeps you protected.
All I know is that my business computer where I work had avg and that shit had so many viruses.

I have a mac, so all of it is pretty shit to me.

Okay, i'll tell you the first one.

1. Firefox - approx 186,000 kilobytes
2. Runescape - approx 173,000 kilobytes
FOr Runescape, I downloaded the browser.. this may be the problem, i'll try closing it.

and 3. is Myspace im which is only 31k of kilo.

So I think it might be Runescape browser just to think about it.. And to answer your previous questions, sometimes I leave my firefox and runescape browser on, as I put my computer to either sleep, or Hibernate.. I think I should close then now lol

Hmm, That may be your problem. How much ram do you have in total?  You see this under the "Performance" tab in Task Manager (May be different for vista).

It sounds like leaving Mozilla Firefox or Runescape on for a long time could be your problem. If the computer is slow or lagging try closing both of these and then opening them again.

Actually, I closed Runescape and everything works fine now!   Thanks so much for the help, I appreciate it. And I have 3 gigs of ram just for the record.

Weird thing is, for the first week or two of installing the Runescape browser, everything worked fine.. oh well though. I fixed what the problem was and thats all I wanted.

What is wrong with you?  Run an Avast boot-time scan and you are likely to find a list of things you missed.  Shit is what happened to me when I made the switch.

If you are telling someone to buy a product at least tell them something good.  Anyone with half a clue on PC security would say something along the lines of NOD32 or Kaspersky.

Please tell me you are joking. Norton is by no means the best of close to it. And if you are going to suggest that people spend their money let them spend it on something like BitDefender or Kaspersky.

To the OP: If you want you can download either Avast or the free version of BitDefender and do a boot time scan, that is sure to get rid on most if not all of the viruses you may have.

Also if all else fails, format the computer and start fresh.

As others have said, Windows vista is an absolute RAM hog.  It's a very hefty OS, and I know you say "Don't trash vista" but it's the truth.  Vista idles at around 1gb of ram, generally.  One thing you can do is try to disable superfetch in vista.  (Depending on how much RAM you have)  One other option is to upgrade to windows 7.  If you're a student (with a .edu email), this will be cheap from this site.  I've just recently upgraded to Windows 7 from vista, and my PC runs a LOT better.

You also need to clean your registry and delete your cache files.  Download the program called ccleaner.  With this program you can clean out your registry errors, etc and make your computer boot faster, as well as make it easier to delete all the junk that builds up.  This is a trusted, easy to use, open source program.

Also +1 for scrapping AVG and buying a good anti virus.  (I suggest BitDefender)

Do you have spybot: search and destroy?  If not.  Get it.
