It can complicate things, but it certainly doesn't mean you can't play.. I don't have particularly large hands either, but over time I've learned how to shift positions and re-arrange my hand to make it work.
Yes, certain chords DO feel more awkward than others, but eventually you get used to them.
It's muscle memory, like anything physical you learn. It's only natural for it to feel awkward, because you hand isn't normally "told" to do that. DON'T get frustrated, because when you hit that "breakthrough point", all of a sudden it will be there. Example: I couldn't play Barr chords for the LIFE of me, and now they just come naturally. It just clicked one day, I took a break from it for a few days, came back to it, and it was like, whoa, holy crap!!
If you tend to be like me, where you naturally want to hook your thumb over the top of the neck, GET OUT OF THAT HABIT. It's not necessarily BAD, but it will severely limit your range of motion and the space you have to work with with your fingers, which makes it much more difficult to learn different chords.
Also, if you haven't experimented with songs that use a capo, you might consider it. Because you're using the capo, the space between the frets is a lot smaller. At the very least, it might help as a starting point so you can work your way up and learn to accommodate the larger frets.
Hope this helps. Don't give up!!
