Okay, throughout my childhood up to the age of 13, I had a series of hamsters. I've been through a lot of breeds (Syrian, Russian, winter white, Roborovsky, etc) as well as a lot of other small rodents such as degu, rats, mice, etc..

The thing is, I've decided to get back into handling and maybe breeding hamsters, but prices have changed since 6 years ago, and I was wondering if anybody knows what prices of small rodents are like at big pet chains? The only indication of price I could find was for the Syrian at Pets At Home =/

those aren't the ones you want to be breeding. they will just yield unhealthy babies. it'd be best to go to a hobby breeder really.

Well, my sister gets "regular" hamsters at the pet store for around $6, but the ones you're talking about sound kind of fancy, so I really don't know.

You think? To be honest if I remember rightly when we bred them before we got them from a local breeder, but I can't for the fuck of me remember who/where and there don't seem to be any adverts online for hamster breeders in my town

Yeah those would be Syrians, they are around £7 here which is like $11 or something, but I don't know whether to go to a big chain or a local breeder.

pet stores buy in bulk from large scale breeders who really dont have time to pay attention to the health of what they are breeding, so you're more likely to get females passing on traits like cancerous tumours, which are very common.

a small hobby breeder will pay much closer attention to it though.

Any idea where I'll find adverts for local breeders?

i'd look online first. as odd as it sounds there are probably hamster clubs around england, with a list of breeders.
