Erm. Yeh, I understand that you're just starting out. But you can at least spend $100 or $150 on one, especially if you're going to ask her to marry you.
Shows your dedication and how important she is to you.
I know it's the thought that counts, but if my boyfriend spent $50   on my engagement ring, I would feel a bit insulted.
