What's the big deal about it? Why does the state have to be involved in it anyway? Why don't people just live together, and if they want to create such a union, they don't need the state for that, they should just do it. I see the reasons why the state likes marriage, but I really don't see why it should get involved.

Legal rights and tax benefits.

Legal rights include things like visitation rights in medical emergencies, so yeah it matters quite a bit.
