I agree to some of that, but not all.  I can agree to thinking less of oneself.  However, hanging out with a friend sometimes makes me feel even MORE isolated so I feel better when I'm at home.  Also, it's not like people get up every day and tell themselves, "Okay!  I'm going to be depressed today!" That's what I think of when I hear someone say it's a choice.  Sometimes the guidelines mentioned can help, but for others it doesn't.  Some cases are worse than others.

i think you're missing the point a little bit.

the point is to do what helps you as an individual.

it's a matter of brain chemistry.. when you feel sad, it's possible for you to be addicted to that chemical emotion. depression is just an addiction to sadness, which is only brought on by continually feeling sad and not being proactive in making yourself feel better.

basically, the point is that you have to LET yourself get depressed.

Depression is not an addiction to sadness.  Have you ever read the symptoms of depression?  Just because you give in to the feelings doesn't mean you're addicted to them.
Fighting against the feelings of depression is like trying to convince yourself the sky isn't blue when you know it is.  It's basic psych 101: when the left brain is in control (rationality) the right brain is not in control (emotions), and vice versa.  If I'm strongly feeling that I'm worthless then my rationality is affected and I start to think I'm worthless.

Anyway. I agree with the first website concerning depression, but when it comes to most abstract things concerning humans it's not an absolute.  Yeah, there are ways to combat depression but they're not sure-fire.  Part of the symptoms of depression is feeling lethargic.  How exactly can I get out of my house and not "remain immobile," like the website advises, when I have absolutely no energy?  I've had some days where depression hits and I felt like I just drank five 40 ounce beers.  I literally stumbled around like I had just walked out of a bar. There was nothing I could do but go lay down.  But the symptoms are not always consistent in severity or length.  Some days it's combatant and some days it's not.  It just depends.

Sure. Depression is a choice. Just like Diabetes or Cancer is a choice.   I don't see how a disease can be a choice, even if it is a mental illness.

Pure bullshit. Maybe for some people it is a choice, but some of us actually have a real biological problem.
