so i'm a freshman planning to be a math major. since i don't have a major advisor yet, i talked to my calc professor (who is also in his first year as "director of the major program") about course selection for spring.

he said three math classes next semester would be too much because it would be bad for my grades. the thing is, i want to take lots of math because math work is a lot easier and more interesting for me than reading- and writing-based work. so i don't really think it would be bad for my grades.

so i think i have three options, and i need help figuring out what to do.
a) ignore what he said and sign up for 3 math classes
b) talk to him about my reasons for wanting to take 3 math classes in hope of convincing him
or c) sign up for 2 math classes and deal with another  stupid class i don't want to take

Listen to his advice, taking three classes of a similar nature is a BAD idea, especially so early. Do two right now, and if you find it too easy, maybe take three next semester.

You don't HAVE to do what you don't want to do.

However, you SHOULD keep in mind that, math major or not, you will still need your basic core classes.

You should talk to your advisor though. Maybe you can do two math classes and one of something else, and compromise. That way you satisfy your advisor, get a head start on your core requirements, and still get to take the classes you want.

By the way... why a math major? Not saying it's bad, I'm just curious. My cousin went with a math major.

i understand the idea behind what you're saying, but is it really "early"? i've been doing general education for 12 years...

Have you already taken a semester of college? If so, then disregard this. If you haven't, then just stay cautious. There's a chance it could totally blow you away from being different. Time management, for example, could just screw you over. The thing is, if you take three classes and begin to totally bomb one or all of them, you're in trouble, whereas if you take 2 and it's too easy for you, the worst thing that happens is you ace two classes and are a little bored with your other class.

Besides, like someone else said, you need to get your core classes out of the way sometime, might as well start working on them now.

if i pass all my classes this semester, i will have satisfied all my core requirements, so that's not an issue.

so i know i have the ideological advantage because they would've made a policy against what i want to do, if it were a bad enough thing to do. i even talked to a different professor who said it was a good idea to take the 3 classes that i'm considering. it's just that i think the "director of the major program" will have some say in my future as a major and i don't want to like piss him off at the start.

i want to be a math major because i have always liked math and i'm good at it, and some reputable people told me that there's no reason to worry about getting a job after earning a math degree.

Three math classes won't satisfy all of your core requirements, trust me.

There may not be a policy against it, but trust me hun, its really easy to screw yourself over by taking the wrong classes. It can delay graduation if you mess it up enough. LISTEN to your advisor. This kind of thing is WHY they are there.

No reason to worry about getting a job... hmm... how many jobs do you ACTUALLY think are going to require a math major? I'm not saying it's bad, but my cousin said the same thing. Good at math, so it was a good major for him. His job options are VERY limited now.

Not much requires a math major. It just doesn't. You could teach or do something with science, but there isn't much.

EDITED FOR SPELLING ERROR.
