A lot of times money is to be made where people aren't actually advertising for jobs.
For example, doing yardwork during the summer, snow shoveling in the winter.
Elderly people are a good source of work.  They often need errand done:  someone to go to the drugstore for them, grocery shopping, cleaning the house, personal care issues.

I knew a guy who would go into town (it was a small town) with a bucket of wash water and a long handled squeegy and go to each merchant and ask if they wanted the outside of their windows cleaned.
He didn't charge a lot, buy he stayed busy.

It is very hard to get a job now.  A friend of mine is looking and looking.  He had a few interviews already I am pretty sure.  Just keep looking.

One just doesn't cut it these days :\

There is work out there, especially since the holiday season is kicking into gear.  As for high paying skill jobs, there are still a ton too.  I'm not hiring as much as I used to, but there are still interviews going on all over.  (I haven't given an interview in like 3 months, where it used to be like 3 a week for awhile).  This could mainly be because I'm deadly in an interview:  my bar is like through the roof.
