Writing with a Sharpie on a CD

Is writing on a CD with a Sharpie marker bad, can it really damage the cd?

I've heard of special markers that claim to work on CDs without damaging them, however. I've always done it with a Sharpie and have never had any problems.

Is that because I have good luck, or it really doesn't hurt anything and the special markers don't really do anything...well, special. :P

Thanks

It's fine, just don't write it on the data side (obviously).

Just write on the top and it's cool. Nothing's ever happened to my CDs.

The plastic they are made of is generally fairly resistant to attack anyway and there isn't enough solvent in indelible markers to do much to anything. Typically they use the wrong sort of solvent, too.

As long as you aren't writing on the data side, there's no reason it should damage the disk. Whatever company is trying to sell you special ones for CDs is a rip-off.
