I have a pretty decent idea for a story, but how do you start it off?
I mean.. how do you know how you're going to write it.. what are the first words? What is the first chapter..

Ahh this drives me crazy, because I can't think of any way to start it..

It doesn't matter where you start, as long as you start somewhere. You can start in the middle and write the beginning later if you want.

It just really depends on your writing style and  what the story is about

^ Pretty much.

Write everything you can think of down. Then sort things out. Add more if needed.

I like to start with scenes. Intense moments or developments. Then sketch out the characters required to produce the personalities that cause such intensity, then shape the values that drive those personalities, and flesh out circumstances that would lead up to the original, intense scene.

Not all stories have those scenes, but sometimes, a character or theme is born just from a painting, or the way a woman plays with her hair, or how a mouthful of fresh air tastes like in an isolated mountain.
