I did my own Benchmark tests on AVG, so did the company I worked for at one stage. Its proven that other software is better including AOL's crap. I believe top sources including government knows what they are talking about. The new Mac PC operation systems are based on Linux and Linux is based on Windows, even source codes match in places. Your saying there is one virus which isn't remotely possible, as there is more then just plain old viruses out there. Even your iPhones can get Key loggers, tracers, Spam Cookies and so forth. Nothing is fool proof and every OS has a back-door. Post edited at 4:24 am on June 25, 2009 by Catlin

lol Linux is based on Windows? You've got to be kidding me mate. And OS X is based on Unix, not Linux. Source codes match in places? Are you fucking joking? For one, MS source-code is proprietary so I'd like to know how you even managed to get a hold of it. 'Spam cookies' aren't viruses, and no, iPhones may theoretically be susceptible to viruses, but none have been made for it, and transmitting one would be pretty hard. Please at least know what you're talking about if you're going to make all these 'accusations' and bold claims.

lol. Unix is a type of Linux. Linux is the overall name. Ever wonder why Linux looks similar to windows? Because the source code in places matches. I studied this as part of a course so I could get Cisco Qualified as a Systems Administrator. Linux is not directly from Windows, but source codes match in some places. You kidding me? I was watching Attack of the Show last year and they were talking about the first iPhone Virus. Transmitting be difficult? iPhones roam on the 2G or 3G network and connect to the Web = Quite Easy to download a virus without knowing it. Spam Cookies, Trojans Trackers, Key Loggers and so forth are considered Viruses. Common Knowledge. They teach kids that in Computer Class in Grade 5. Try again.

No, Unix is different from Linux. Linux evolved from Unix but you can't consider Unix a flavour or distribution of Linux as say you could Gentoo, Mandrake, Fedora, etc. Linux isn't the overall name, if we're going by overall names you might as well say 'Operating System' it would be far more accurate description. In fact OS X Leopard meets the Open Unix Certification requirements and can officially be thought of as a Unix distro, like Sun OS for example. It is therefore stupid and incorrect to say Unix is a type of Linux, because any person with a infinitesimal amount of technical knowledge will laugh in your face if you said that OS X was a type of Linux. Why it looks similar? Seriously? Are you just joking now? The windowing environment that a Linux distro may use bears no relevance to Windows because of the coding. KDE and GNOME may look similar because that's how they were designed, it has absolutely NOTHING to do with the coding behind it. Moreover you could easily change what windowing system you were using and the underlying Linux kernel would be the same. Seriously, drop the act Catlin. If you're trying to pass of this bullshit, there is absolutely no way you qualified anything remotely to do with technical knowledge, unless you were hit on the head with a brick recently or something. Find me ANYTHING on the Internet that says that they have similar source code and I will take my word back, but no semi-intelligent being with technical knowledge would ever say something as stupid as that. Oh gee, AOTS, that's pretty hard core evidence right there lol. I've nothing against it, but ATOS is really dismal these days, you could see when all the decent presenters from the screen savers left that the show will turn to shit. Aside from that, please find me the online article, or a clip on youtube, otherwise I call bullshit. For one, Apple have locked down the iPhone OS so much that if somehow you managed to even get a virus on there somehow, it wouldn't be able to execute under root privileges (needed for any sort of damage or transmission) unless you'd given that yourself or jailbroken your device and fucked stuff up. Yeah, so what if iPhones can roam on the Internet, you still can't download files using the web-browser, at least it won't let you save anything but images. Apple designed it well, you're not going to be able to get some remote-exploit on your device, I should know, I follow the news pretty well since I have one. lol, you've just demonstrated your ignorance. For one, key loggers are just pieces of software that log keystrokes, they don't have to be viruses. I suggest you learn the definition of a virus before you make even more of a fool of yourself. Viruses specifically have to be self-replicating software that infects other machines. malware, spyware, etc, are all different, and since a normal keylogger doesn't actually copy itself over the network or spread otherwise, it wouldn't be considered a virus. Spam cookies? wtf? Cookies are cookies, and aren't viruses. Trojans are also different, because unlike viruses they don't self-replicate. Seriously, I don't know whether you have your head stuck up your arse or anything, but seeing as how you don't seem to have any technical knowledge whatsoever, I'd ask you to remove it from there.

First no one uses Gentoo, Mandrake. I dont even remember if they are still in dev as thats how much anyone cares about them. On the Linux code, Hierarchical Directory Structure: DOS, Windows, and Linux all store information in files which are organized into directories (also called folders). Directories may contain files and other directories. Although, the commands differ, files and directories can be created, deleted, renamed, copied, moved and listed from the command prompt. Fancy fucking that, they use the same Directory System which means the code would be similar. Not the same, but it would be similar. http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-roadmap1.html Linux is a kernal, unix is a type of OS. Unix is a registered name so Linux cannot be described as a Unix OS however you will here linux described as a Unix like system. One thing to bear in mind is that Linux is NOT an OS it is just the kernal the GNU (recursive acronym for GNU's Not Unix) is what people often confuse as being 'Linux' this is however the command line and tools that interact with the Linux Kernal. Both Minix and Linux taken the idea from Unix not the source, like everything will be handled like a file... AOTS shows are sourced. Thats like auto saying Wikipedia is all fake. Wiki can also be used as a source, as each bit is checked by Community Admins for sources and validity. On the iPhone Virus shit, http://www.ipodhacks.com/article.php?sid=2482 http://www.pmptoday.com/tag/iphone-virus/ Oh and another 36 thousand links if you want them. The rest of your iPhone shit, I dont care about as I don't roll with Apple. Nothing is virus proof. Fact. Anyone who argues against this statement needs to stop eating a crock of shit. On your last bit, Even Wik SAYS YOU FAIL. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_virus
The term "computer virus" is sometimes used as a catch-all phrase to include all types of malware. Malware includes computer viruses, worms, trojan horses, most rootkits, spyware, dishonest adware, crimeware, and other malicious and unwanted software), including true viruses. Viruses are sometimes confused with computer worms and Trojan horses, which are technically different. A worm can exploit security vulnerabilities to spread itself to other computers without needing to be transferred as part of a host, and a Trojan horse is a program that appears harmless but has a hidden agenda. Worms and Trojans, like viruses, may cause harm to either a computer system's hosted data, functional performance, or networking throughput, when they are executed. Some viruses and other malware have symptoms noticeable to the computer user, but many are surreptitious.
*Takes out a small violin* *Plays it just for marshmellowman* Its really sad when Wiki says your wrong. Shows how much your wrong. learn the definition next time before making idiot outlandish statements. When you can come back with facts, maybe I'll pay attention. Cheerio. Keep personal attacks and comments like that shit, out of this thread. This is about IT AVG, not your outlandish attacks on me. For a mod, I would of thought you knew this, but I guess your like Brent, too stubborn to know personal attacks are not allowed in a debate.

" The term "virus" is also commonly but erroneously used to refer to other types of malware, adware, and spyware programs that do not have the reproductive ability." That's from the same wikipedia article. I'll no longer reply to someone who is clearly technologically illiterate. And I also don't see any personal attacks.
Thats one opionion on it being erroneously. Find me a link or source that the majority thinks it. Seeing as Microsoft Employees and Apple's have used it, they must be idiots I guess. Anyway, that article is a bit messed up as both of our quotes conflict with them. Ironic isn't it? Either someone fucked up on their Wiki Grammar or they are just plain dumb. So I showed you a Apple iPhone virus so thats undisputed, also showed you Linux, I take it you have no rebuttal. You may know a bit about computers and IT, but your lacking. Everyone is,. Cheerio Mate.
