I laughed out loud when i saw that part during the movies. The 14 year old girls sitting in front of my got pissed because it was like the 5th time that I had started laughing during the film.

I've always just thought they kinda... imploded and died.
Generally burst into flames or ashes, In the Anne rice mythos if one was very old and powerful they might just darken dramatically with the side affect of killing several weaker ones whom are connected via bloodline.
