We could have, but it would have been much worse for everyone.
The way I see it, we fought the entire war, but then the Americans "won" it.

I think we could have held Europe, but it would have been more difficult.

Also they were mainly fighting in Japan and outside of Europe.

Realistically we couldn't, we needed the extra man power.

However the americans have seemed to have forgottewn that they weren't the only country fighting. The British, ANZAC and Canadian forces are pretty much forgotten in their books.
