If she's been your friend for a good while then I don't think it's too much. If you have the money and you're willing to spend it then its all good.
To be perfectly frank, I don't think its really what it is or how much or how little it costs - its more the whole concept of the thought you put into it. You knew she needed a new one... that makes it perfect.
I always seem to spend a lot of money on people - cause I end up getting them things they wouldn't want to buy for themselves.
