i think the number one reason is that it boosts their ego.

"ohh i have a girlfriend but it's just one girl who likes me. if i had another who was all over me, i'd feel amazing"

the number two reason is the magic of a relationship tends to wear off after a little while, and it becomes harder to keep up the determination to make it work and preserve loyalty.

some of the reasons relationships usually don't work out in the long term for young people. it takes a lot of time and maturation to really understand and cope with a serious relationship.
