Hmm most ppl didn''t quite get it right. Some got it totally wrong (I won't point fingers though because there's no point in that
) 1. Aztecs are Natives to Central Mexico (nahuatl).
They were there for centuries and created what we call the Aztec Empire which expanded through the Anahuac Valley (also called Valley of Mexico or Basin of Mexico) in what is now central Mexico.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valley_of_Mexico
In 1519 the Spanish conquistadors led by Cortés (who really was a mutineer at that point) started attacking the Azter Empire and allied themselves with the enemies of the Aztecs. The Aztec Empire fell and the Spanish people who came in mixed with the local Native people to form most of the Mexican people.
2. Mexicans today are generally descendants of the Spanish and Aztecs as well as OTHER native ppl who lived there (including Maya, Mixtec, Tarascan, Tlaxclateca, Huastec/Teenek, and Zapotec)
So Aztec is not exacly = Mexican. They make up PART of the mexican culture ppl and heritage but not all.
And they don't represent ALL amerindians from Mexico either.
This said it is of courese a very important part of Mexico no doubt about that.
