5 Margaritas later, we start setting off fireworks. You could imagine my drunken surprise when my cousins neighbor ventured into her yard and told us that the loud noises had startled her husband, and he died instantaneously of a heart attack.

I feel so terrible. In my defense, he was dying of terminal lung cancer. And no, no I'm not joking. I wish I was.

How did him getting startled have any effect on the cancer?

Damn, that must feel pretty shitty. Don't be too hard on yourself though, I doubt you were setting off fireworks with the intent of ending a person's life.

Even if it is true, it's not your fault.  What you did was not out of the ordinary; cars backfiring make that noise, too.
Also, this idea of startling someone into a heart attack is way overplayed.

Clearly she was displeased with the noise you were causing and when her husband died, decided to give you a guilt trip.

I'm not being cavalier about his death, but you  guys really had nothing to do with it.

From what you've said and what I know, I'd venture to say he didn't die of a heart attack; he died of lung cancer. People don't die from hearing a loud noise.
