Just saw this and realized that I lost a big white dog to heart worms. It was probably a miserable death for him. I suggest not getting a new dog for a while because It just wont be the same.

I lost my best mate when i was 13! He was murdered along with his brother 2 sisters and mum by his Stepdad! I found that losing a mate is harder than losing family sometimes!

the same thing happened to me about a month ago so i know how your feeling i miss my puppy too she was 8 and when they gave her a booster shot for kennal cough it caused her to stop producing white blood cells and she died a week later. i hope you feel better tho good luck with this tough time
