You could buy one, sure.
But if your question is, will it work, then no.

Are you sure that your sound card is physically broken?  Maybe you just need to reinstall the drivers...

I'd personally recommend a new cheap sound card over a usb external device.... but they probably do exist (though I haven't seen one)

Yes. It's what I have - it's called an external sound card. If you don't want to sped a lot of money, I highly recommend the Creative Sound Blaster Live! [USB]

USB headsets do work without sound cards, but I haven't had great luck with them honestly. I probably just install them wrong.

They only work without soundcards if they have soundcards built in

That is why they are USB!

But if your question is, will it work, then no.

Why wouldn't it work? Do you have any reasoning for your reply? Very misleading.

Of course it will work, providing there are correct drivers for your operating system.

If you're on XP or Vista ( ) then they might even have drivers built in so it could be plug-and-play.

Depends, what's the thingie and what is/are the speaker/s?

You can get USB soundcards, I have one. Mine has no amplification, it's line level.

Not sure if other brands or types would have speaker level outputs.

So that brings me to my next question, what speakers ?

I'm assuming if you used them with a soundcard in the past, that your speakers would have some sort of built in amplification, but your question is sort of broad.

So with normal pc speakers or similar, like mp3 player speaker sets line level out from a USB soundcard would do the trick.

You sure it's broken though ?

What's the problem with it ?

Quality of my USB sound card through my amp sounds better than my PCI sound card...

Lol, all you guys are practically brain-dead newbies.  The only difference between an external and internal soundcard, is the accessibility.  As long as the external comes with drivers and they're installed, it will be the same (if cheap) or better (if expensive) than what you had.  QED.

Not quite...   there would be differences between a USB and PCI bus.

For example, a friends GPS would not work plugged into the USB when charging his laptop through a cheap inverter that didn't have a pure sine wave output. Because there was so much interference from the 'dirty' mains supply it wasn't communicating properly over USB.

Now that is a pretty uncommon situation, but still, everything else hardware wise on the laptopt worked.

My external USB soundcard didn't even need drivers.

Oh and they are usually more expensive, like you can get some pretty decent cheap soundcards. But have to spend quite a bit for USB.
