The Road and Blood Meridian are off the charts, especially the latter. I've never felt so depressed reading before. He's definitely one of the best contemporary American authors.

My current fave is The Alchemyst, by Michael Scott. It's a really cool fantasy story set in present day California. It's a part of a series, but the first book got me hooked and I'm waiting to pick up the second one.

I've thrown this up on a couple other boards, but the Alchemyst has an online game, sort of a companion to the first three books of the series: [url/] http://www.alchemystgame.com.
