I don't see a need to change the $1. Coins are an option but they're easier to lose. I probably lost a bunch of 500yen coins in Japan when I was there. The denominations are fine as they are today. If it's inconvenient to some, use a card.

The problem with the $1 is that they don't last. And it would make vending machine usage far easier. Get rid of the $1 bill.

I thought about the idea of having no currency and just using a credit/debit card for everything. It obviously can't apply to everyone, but I no longer carry cash on me unless necessary.
