From the script he gave me today, apparently my astigmatism is going away as it went from -0.75 in both eyes to -0.25 in one and -0.50 in the other. And the power went down too...from -1.0 and -.75 to -0.50 and -0.75. Could that actually be right, or did he mess up somehow? I'm positive my vision isn't better than it used to be!

If you see well with your new RX everything is fine.
Some optometrists over-correct other under-correct, others try to find the middle. It is not correct science, it has many invironmental and psychological aspects as well.

I doubt he'll listen. He didn't listen to me when I doubted what he said when I was there and told him how things used to be.

I'm planning on getting a second opinion. But an unbiased one, so I won't say what this doctor prescribed.

I'm -6.75 in both eyes, so I can't really feel any sort of pitty for you.

If the doctor is finding less minus than beforehand, I'd say your previous prescription was more likely to be wrong than this one is

It's a lot easier to over-minus a young person than to under-minus them

What eye specialists prescribe is never an exact science though. As KathyN said, there are lots of factors involved. A high amount of prescriptions need to be modified in order for patients to tolerate. I would estimate close to 25%

I went and got a second opinion elsewhere, and the script is different, stronger, and better. I can see much better with the new one than the first one. I'm still gonna keep my followup appt with the first place and kind of run a "competition" between the lenses over the next week.

The only reason I agree the doctor is unprofessional is the communication, I assume that with such a bad level of communication the prescription is more likely to be wrong. If the patient (and not a stupid one, I must say) don't understand the reason behind the prescription, why lower, what was going on on the test etc... it just means that the doc didn't pay enough attention and didn't try explaining everything, I think it is very important.

I agree. The second place explained everything from the pre-testing to all the elements of the exam to the choice of contacts. They were all very professional and polite, and I would be happy to go back there again.

Maybe it would make sense to see another doctor? I have a very poor eyesight and I used to wear eyeglasses, but I wear contact lenses now. My doctor didn't tell me I could do the eye surgery, so I made an appointment with another one when I was in Australia, http://benconnell.com.au/ . They told me with my vision (it's -5, 5) they can make it as good as 1. It seemed not so expensive to me, so I decided to try. I think that with your vision you can do well even without surgery, the main thing is that they choose a correct treatment course for you.
