In psychology, the Asch conformity experiments or the Asch Paradigm were a series of laboratory experiments directed by Solomon Asch in the 1950s that demonstrated the degree to which an individual's own opinions are influenced by those of a majority group.[1][2][3][4]

The methodology developed by Asch has been utilised by many researchers and the paradigm is in use in present day social psychology. The paradigm has been used to investigate the relationship between conformity and task importance,[5] age,[6] gender,[7][8][9][10] and culture.[5][10]

Basically, they would hire a group of actors and 1 test subject and tell the actors to give a false answer to a basic question such as which line is the same length to the one on the left:

When all of the actors would say, "A" or "B" (the wrong answers) the test subject (who thinks they all are being equally tested) would be more likely to give the same wrong answer in order to conform to the opinions of his perceived peers, even though the answer is obviously "C" for anyone that isn't visually impaired

All results are based on participants' responses to critical trials. In the control group, with no pressure to conform to confederates, the error rate was less than 1%.[12] An examination of all critical trials in the experimental group revealed that one-third of all responses were incorrect. These incorrect responses often matched the incorrect response of the majority group (i.e., confederates). Overall, in the experimental group, 75% of the participants gave an incorrect answer to at least one question.

What do you think livewire? is it really that easy to convince people to believe a lie, just by fabricating a 'consensus' that idiots will be tempted into assuming is correct?

Yes it is, did you watch the video?

Are you saying "the line on the left is as long as line A" is not a lie?

It clearly explains why in the link that you posted:

The Asch conformity experiments are often interpreted as evidence for the power of conformity and normative social influence,[13][14][15] where normative influence is the willingness to conform publicly to attain social reward and avoid social punishment.[16]

shhh, come on now, you can't expect kidd rune to be able to understand how people work. poor sod is so socially retarded it's no wonder he can't grasp the basics of human psychology.

So basically idiots will just deliberately lie and "go with the flow" for the sole fact that they think everyone else believes those lies.

That's pretty sad, and to think that such illogical predispositions apply to most people.

Dr Polio why would someone lie just to fit in? What is your official diagnosis?

It is "Normal" to lie about something so obviously false?

To me it's seems like a case of intense retardation, for which there may be no cure...

It is a test. 1 person and a group of actors. The test subject thinks the actors are also being tested, he doesn't know they are actors.

They actors deliberately lie on a question that the test subject has the mental aptitude to answer correctly.

If the actors say the line on the left corresponds to line #3 (even though we all see it corresponds to #2) then the test individual (who believes everyone is being equally tested) will be more likely to DELIBERATELY LIE and say it is #3, rather than #2, OR he actually is deluded into believing in something false just because of a perceived 'consensus'.

I don't understand what's so hard to understand about this. The answers to the question are obvious, but the effect of the opinion of perceived peers influences how individuals answer, although it shouldn't for any reason cause a sane, rational person to say that the line corresponds to anything but #2.
