Best in what way ?

Best value, best performance, best looking.

If best performance at the moment it would be the 8800GTX. However ATI should be bringing something out to challenge that.

As for best value would depend on your budget.

Best looking would depend on personal taste.

There'd be other 'best's but I can't think right now.

Indeed so.  The new ATI X2x00 cards are coming out in early March - not only are they DirectX-10 compatible, but they have different price points, some of which are even reasonable (much unlike the 8800 series as of now).

Wait for those.
